Rankin Rob remarked recently that he ought to take a look at Pendleton County since many of the posted photographs were taken there (this is number fifteen). On both counts he's right. Pendleton's located in the Potomac Highlands with generous helpings of the Monongahela National Forest, mountain farms, sparkling creeks, and some serious heritage that has not yet been wiped away by progress.
Right now, it's eight-thirty Sunday nite; and, I'm packed and ready to head in that direction early tomorrow morning December 1st. There's an early winter storm smothering the Midwest with snow and raw wet weather covering North Carolina and Virginia - my way to Pendleton County. I've been studying the 5-day forecasts at various stops along the way: Warm Springs and Stuart, Virginia; and Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Tomorrow will be wet. Clear Tuesday. Nicer Wednesday. Then, more rain and snow moves in Thursday and Friday when I'll be in Bath County Virginia only one county away from Pendleton. Mid day temperatures will fall below freezing. That means ice, too.
Nonetheless, I'm leaving tomorrow morning. The truck's full of maps. I can dodge and weave if necessary. Avoid the high mountains and focus on the Piedmont. Don't overreach. Be careful. Be well. Be safe. Dry Run Road will still be there next Spring.
