The American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) chooses not to compete with maples and oaks and other attention grabbing super stars of the Fall color clique. “No siree bob!” Proud and unwilling to be intimidated, the Beech chooses another course from green to yellow to a uniform tawny, bronzy tan. And holds on to its foliage deeply into winter when others have fallen, lost in the forest litter. No side show -- Mister Beech is the only show in the cold empty woods.

As a lover of the American Beech (my favorite tree in America this side of the Bristlecones and Sequoias), I appreciate this posting, Doc. And I give thanks for ALL of your postings done over the recent Thanksgiving weekend. Especially since the marlinton trip laid you low. Welcome back!
