This Winged Sumac, and its sister Sumacs, sometimes take a hit for suspected toxic berries (not true) and the shrub's relentless drive to invade and overtake old fields and natural areas. Standing here, I prefer to admire its capacity, each chilly Fall night, to create a flood of anthocyanins, the pigments responsible for these intense reds temporarily stippled across the granite outcrop.
