Once upon a time in Sweden there lived three well-known botanists, the Commelin Brothers, who practiced their science alongside Carl Linnaeus (1707-1772) who popularized the use of the 'two-latin-word' names for each plant specie. They were friends and associates.
One of the brothers died inspiring Linnaeus to name the genus of this flower, the Slender Dayflower, 'Commelina'. The two prominent, soft appearing, mouse ear, sky blue petals immortalize the surviving brothers. A third, small white petal can be seen behind and somewhat obscured by the bright yellow stamen crowding in front - a botanical 'In Memoriam' gesture from the legendary Name Maker.
